Homer Lloyd Ginns, 83, of King, North Carolina, passed peacefully on Friday, May 28, 2021, having lived a full Christian life of love and dedication to his family, his church, and his community.
Lloyd enjoyed every day to its fullest, recently having treated his family to a long weekend of fun in the Tennessee mountains – and returning to help harvest a crop of hay for his herd of Black Angus cattle.
Born on May 7, 1938, to the Rev. C. Homer and Virginia Ginns, in Springfield, Massachusetts, Lloyd grew up in Cranston, Rhode Island, and Fall River, Massachusetts. He graduated from Durfee High School, in Fall River and then came south to High Point College in North Carolina. In the summers, he returned to New England where he worked at Geneva Point Church Camp on Lake Winnipesaukee, serving as assistant to the chef and inspiring a lifelong love of cooking.
During his college years Lloyd joined Kappa Chi, a Christian fellowship, and sang in the men’s chorus. Also, while at HPC, Lloyd was a member of the Tower Players, appearing in a number of theater productions, an avocation that followed him through life.
Graduating from HPC in 1960 with degrees in sociology and psychology, Lloyd married his lifelong love, Patsy Lee Moore, at Poplar Springs Church of Christ in King. Together, they moved to Columbia, South Carolina, where Lloyd served in the United States Army for two years before being transferred to Anchorage, Alaska.
Upon his discharge from service, Lloyd and Patsy returned to King and built their home on her family farm, where he pursued his interest in raising Black Angus. At this time, also, Lloyd began his career serving as Director of Planning and Social Service at The Methodist Children’s Home in Winston-Salem, a position he loved for many years. In the meantime, he earned his Master’s Degree in Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which served as a basis for his long career in helping children and adults lead more successful lives.
As a next stage, Lloyd helped organize and establish the King Outreach Ministry where he served as the first director for a number of years. During this time, also, he established the Stokes Counseling Service and touched many lives by working with couples and families in the Piedmont area. He particularly enjoyed his work with church groups leading weekend retreats for couples to strengthen Christian marriages. Throughout his life, Lloyd has taken part in church choirs, Sunday school classes, and community activities. Among these are the King Lions’ Club and, particularly, the Stokes County Arts Council. Lloyd appeared in a number of drama productions, such as THE KING AND I and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.
Lloyd exemplified a Christ-centered life as he shared his beliefs through every relationship and interaction. With his faith as his center, he most enjoyed time with family and friends, his work on the farm tending cattle, singing in the choir at church – and, in the summer, returning to “The Hitching Post,” a cottage at Cape Cod where his family has summered for generations. There he had his own personal “fishing hole,” and rekindled acquaintances from his youth. With family and friends, he relished long walks around “The Circle,” and sailing the blue waters of the bay.
But, most of all, Lloyd loved his family: his wife, “Patti,” son Marc Lloyd and wife, Susan; and daughter Monica Lynette, and husband, Dane Hughes – and, most especially, his four grandchildren: Ashley, Virginia, Ethan, and Riley. His sun never set on them! He particularly loved spending time with his nieces and nephews and their families. Lloyd made a special point of keeping up with his extended family in England. Our family appreciates the contacts and love received from relatives in Leicestershire during this time.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, June 5th, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 725 W. Dalton Road, King, North Carolina. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM, and the memorial service, at 3:00 PM in the sanctuary.
The service will be streamed on Trinity United Methodist Church, King, NC Facebook,and YouTubefor those unable to join in person. A graveside service will be planned at a later date.
