Type Classification

General Register (GRFP, GRGP, GRNS, GRSD – Independent Practice) Family Medicine or Specialist physicians who are responsible and accountable for their medical practice and the care of their patients. These physicians do not require supervision.

Limited Practice Register Administrative Medicine Assistant (LRAA) Physicians or osteopaths who have successfully completed an orientation program and assessment of the sponsoring entity which have been approved by the Registrar, who are not the most responsible physician in the administration of patient related matters, whose practice of medicine is limited to medical administration duties assigned by the sponsoring entity, and are subject to the supervision of a member on the General Register or Provisional Register Conditional Practice.

Limited Practice Register Clinical Assistant (LRCA) Physicians who are not qualified for independent practice but who have successfully completed Alberta Health Services’ Clinical Assistant orientation program. These physicians are not the most responsible physician in the care of patients and require supervision by the Program Lead or designate. Their practice of medicine is limited to assignment by Alberta Health Services.

Limited Practice Register Clinical and Surgical Assistant (LRCS) Physicians who are not qualified for independent practice but who have successfully completed Alberta Health Services’ Clinical Assistant orientation program. These physicians are not the most responsible physician in the care of patients and require supervision by the Program Lead, attending surgeon or designate. Their practice of medicine is limited to duties assigned by Alberta Health Services.

Limited Practice Register Orientation and Assessment of Clinical Assistant or Surgical Assistant (LROA) Physicians who have met the criteria for Clinical or Surgical Assistant registration on the Limited Practice Register, and who are enrolled in an Alberta Health Services’ Clinical Assistant or Surgical Assistant orientation program. These physicians are not the most responsible physician in the care of patients and require supervision by the Program Lead or designate. Their practice of medicine is limited to participating in Alberta Health Services’ orientation program.

Limited Practice Register Medical Research Assistant (LRRA) Physicians who are not qualified for independent practice. Medical practice for these physicians is limited to ethically approved medical research studies. These physicians are not the most responsible physician in the care of patients and require supervision by a medical investigator. The medical investigator must be a regulated member of the CPSA registered for independent practice in Alberta.

Limited Practice Register Surgical Assistant (LRSA) Physicians who are not qualified for independent practice but who have successfully completed Alberta Health Services’ Surgical Assistant orientation program. These physicians are not the most responsible physician in the care of patients and require supervision by the attending surgeon or designate. Their practice of medicine is limited to intra-operative surgical assist assignment by Alberta Health Services.

Provisional Register Academic Appointment (PRCA - Independent Practice) Physicians and osteopaths recruited to a full-time academic position at a Faculty of Medicine in Alberta because of their expertise and/or international reputation who do not meet the criteria of the General Register. This registration is valid only during the academic appointment. These members are responsible and accountable for their medical practice without supervision by another physician and are the most responsible physician in the care of their patients.

Provisional Register Conditional General Practice (PRCF, PRCG – Independent Practice) Family Medicine or General Practice physicians who are in the process of qualifying for the General Register but do not yet meet the full criteria. These physicians are responsible and accountable for their medical practice and the care of their patients. They do not require supervision.

Provisional Register Conditional Non-specialist defined Practice (PRCN - Independent Practice) Non-specialist physicians in a specialty discipline, other than Family Medicine, who are in the process of qualifying for the General Register but do not yet meet the full criteria. Non-specialist physicians are allowed to practice in a specialty discipline when they have successfully completed the required postgraduate training in that discipline. These physicians are responsible and accountable for their medical practice and the care of their patients. They do not require supervision.

Provisional Register Conditional Specialist Defined Practice (PRCS – Independent Practice) Physicians in a specialty discipline, other than Family Medicine, who are in the process of qualifying for the General Register but do not yet meet the full criteria. These physicians are responsible and accountable for their medical practice and the care of their patients. They do not require supervision.

Provisional Register Physician Undergoing Practice Assessment (PRPA) Physicians whose clinical skills are being assessed before the physician can go on the Provisional Register. These physicians are not the most responsible physician in the care of patients and require supervision by the assessor or designate.

Provisional Register Postgraduate Trainee (PRPT) Physicians enrolled in an approved postgraduate training program. These physicians are not the most responsible physician in the care of patients and require supervision by the Program Director or designate.

Provisional Register Postgraduate Trainee Physician Extender (PRPX - regular) Physicians enrolled in an approved postgraduate training program. These physicians are not the most responsible physician in the care of patients and require supervision by the Program Director or designate.

Provisional Register Postgrad Trainee Physician Extender Limited (PRPX - Limited) Physicians enrolled in an approved postgraduate training program. These physicians are not the most responsible physician in the care of patients and require supervision by the Program Director or designate.

Provisional Register Postgrad Trainee Physician Extender Surgical Assistant (PRPX – Surgical Assistant) Physicians enrolled in an approved postgraduate training program. These physicians are not the most responsible physician in the care of patients and require supervision by the Program Director or designate.

Student Register (STAB) CPSA members currently in undergraduate medical school training at the University of Alberta or University of Calgary.

Telemedicine Register (TELM) Physicians located outside of Alberta who provide telemedicine services for patients in Alberta.
