Critics Consensus

Secret in Their Eyes wastes its incredible cast on a remake that fails to improve upon -- or even make a compelling case for its own existence in addition to -- the remarkable original.

Jerod S It's a world of cops, and Roberts is one of them that loses her daughter. As others dance in and out of trying to find the killer and handle the situation by legal means, Roberts has already taken justice into her own hands. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/05/24 Full Review Nathan W I had to take a step back and sort of re-evaluate my feelings of this one. Because it started out so strong that it really got its hooks in me. Chiwetel Ejiofer, and especially Julia Roberts, gave such moving and emotional performances early on, that I was invested. I rarely get choked up watching a movie but it hit me hard. (You'll know the scene). I mean, I wanted justice as much as they did! And I spent the better part of the movie looking through the lens of this already being a quality picture based on that... Which I will later outline why that is not entirely the case. First off, I have not seen the source material for this project, which I hear is great, but there were things I liked. Normally I find that non-linear storytelling to be a detriment, but it wasn't so much of a problem here. Mainly because it wasn't confusing. It was always clear where we were, when we were, and what was happening. I liked how things unfolded. The plot was gripping and it evoked many different emotions as we went along. I thought it was fairly well written. All the dialogue and deliveries felt natural for the most part. But the problem with all those things is that they didn't last. There was a steady and noticeable decline in quality from start to finish. The performances were less and less emotional to the point I wasn't even sure anyone knew what they were supposed to be feeling. The dialogue wasn't as convincing anymore and performances felt stiff. The plot became less interesting and didn't make as much sense. It became more of a missed love story than a murder investigation. And on and on. Maybe it was always that way and my early fondness was just slowly wearing off. Who knows? I will say that the ending was fantastic! I didn't see the twist... I mean twists coming, which helped bring me back in to the story a little bit. But man, I wish the whole movie had been like the first 20 minutes. Could have been something special. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/30/24 Full Review donnie m some good actors but bad acting and the guy who plays ray is like barnie fife Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review Mark B Good acting but slow plodding a slog of a movie. By the “twist “ ending you just did not care and neededit to be over. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/05/24 Full Review Judith D The acting in this movie isinspiring. I had never seen the original that this is a remake of So i'm not biased concerning that. I would recommend this movie to anyone Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review A.L.Jude P Why so negative approach when the movie made us think about allegiance, selfishness etc..
