Opportunities and Challenges in Addressing Child Abuse in the Albanian School Setting

This research aims to explore the opportunities and obstacles of the school social worker, as part of the multidisiplinary team, in addressing child abuse and to make evident the Albanian practice of treatment and prevention of child abuse in the school setting. The study uses a multidisciplinary approach in addressing the problem, where the role of the school social worker is seen as interrelated with those of the other actors of the multidisciplinary team. The qualitative method is used, including secondary data review, such as existing literature on international practices and secondary data on Albania, and also primary data gathering, through semistructured interviews of the employees of the existing school service and the focusgrup interview, conducted with professionals of nongovernmental organisations which work on child protection issues, in collaboration with the school system. The main findings inform the field professionals of the opportunities and challenges of the school social worker, in addressing child abuse, the potential of the specialist of child protection in the school and the limitations of this position in the present.

PLAY-WAY INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY AND ACHIEVEMENT OF PRESCHOOLERS IN NUMBER WORKS IN UYO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF AKWA IBOM STATE

The study investigated on play-way instructional strategy and achievement of preschoolers in number works in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The purpose of the study was to determine how the adoption of play-way as an instructional strategy for teaching number work influences pupils' achievement. The study also determined how moderating variable like gender affect pupils' achievement in number work when play-way is used as instructional strategy. To guide the study, two (2) hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance, the design of the study was quasi-experimental, non-randomized pretest-posttest control group involving two experimental groups and two control groups. The population of the study was made up of 2,829 pupils of 110 private nursery and primary schools in Uyo Local Government Area from where sample of 97 pupils were randomly selected. The instrument used for the collection of data and implementation of the experiment were Number Work Achievement Test (NUWAT) and Lesson Note on Number Work (Play-way and Conventional methods). All the data collected were analyzed with analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) statistics. The major findings of the study include: a significant higher achievement of pupils in play-way instructional strategy group than those in conventional method; a significant difference in achievement between boys and girls taught with play-way instructional strategy. As a result of the findings, it was recommended that preschool educators should use play-way instructional strategy and a lot of activities to enhance pupils' achievement in numerical skills.

This study examined the effect of scaffolding instructional strategies and gender on the performance of pupils in Basic Science and Technology in public primary schools in Rivers State. Two specific objectives and two null hypotheses guided the study. Non-randomized pretest, post-test and control group experimental design was adopted for the study. The population size consisted of 42,409 basic four pupils; out of which 147 were drawn as sample size using purposive sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was the Basic Science and Technology Performance Test. The data was analyzed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The findings of the study revealed that there is a significant difference in the Basic Science and Technology mean performance scores of pupils taught with scaffolding instructional strategies and those taught with conventional method. The Basic Science and Technology mean performance scores of boys and girls taught with scaffolding instructional strategies does not differ significantly with those taught with conventional method. Recommendations were made which include that scaffolding instructional strategy should be used in classroom teaching/learning interaction to enhance the teaching and learning of pupils as well as improve their performance in all subjects.

Effects of Story Retelling on the Listening Comprehension of Primary School Pupils in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State

This study examined the effect of Story Retelling on the Listening Comprehension of primary schools in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Non-randomized pretest-posttest control group research design was adopted for the study. Population of the study consisted of 694 primary one pupils in public primary schools. The sample size of the study was 66 primary one pupils. This was obtained using simple random sampling technique to select the two schools and then the intact classes in the sampled schools were used. Two research purpose of the study and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The hypotheses were tested using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The result of the study shows that there is a significant mean difference in the listening comprehension performance scores of pupils taught with story retelling instructional strategy and those taught with conventional method in primary schools in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The results also showed that there is no significant mean difference in the listening comprehension performance scores of pupils taught with story retelling instructional strategy and those taught with the conventional method with respect to gender in primary schools in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Based on the findings of the study recommendations were made which include; that teachers should incorporate story retelling as an instructional strategy to improve comprehension of pupils in the primary level of education.
