Texas winter storm updates: Delayed starts for schools on Friday include EPISD, Socorro ISD (2024)

Snow arrived in El Paso Wednesday night.

Precipitation is expected to stop by sunrise but cold temperatures will continue Thursday and Friday. Snow could stick around in parts of the region as the temperature is expected to remain sub-freezing, according to the National Weather Service.

NWS encouraged people to plan for a slow commute on Thursday and to stay home if possible.

El Paso school districts will have a delayed start to classes on Friday after announcing closures due to winter weather:

  • El Paso ISD
  • Socorro ISD
  • Ysleta ISD
  • Anthony ISD

El Paso animal services remindspublic to keep pets safe during cold

Provide a warm place to sleep and rest: If possible, bring pets indoors, a garage or a laundry room are spaces that can be used. If you must leave a pet outside, make sure they have proper shelterand is in a location away from any drafts. Provide dry blankets or straw and rotate them routinely to ensure they are dry.

Several flights canceled at El Paso airport

El Paso International Airport had more than a dozen flight cancellations listed Thursday as icy weather was impacting air travel across Texas.

There were 21 arrivals canceled and 19 departures canceled. The canceled flights were traveling to and from Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio and one flight each to Denver and Chicago.

Delayed openings of El Paso VA facilities due to inclement weather

The El Paso VA Main Facility and all outlying clinics will be operatingon a delayed start of three hours Thursday morning.

Clinical teams will becontacting all patients with scheduled appointments that are affected by the delayedstart time.

TxDOT: Trans Mountain Road closed

Texas Department of Transportation tweetedTrans Mountain Road remains closed, along with the following due to cold weather:

  • US 62/180 remains closed NM state line to Huecos.
  • I-10 EB Mile 62, remains closed, traffic detoured W at Exit 49 (Fabens).

El Paso COVID testing, vaccine sites closed

The city of El Paso’s COVID-19 testing and vaccine sites will be closed Thursday as a precautionary measure due to the severe winter weather forecast.

All 10 city sites will resume regular hours Friday. The Office of Emergency Management also will open two rural testing sites Friday in Fabens and Vinton.

TxDOT warns of icy conditions on I-10

Texas Department of Transportation warned drivers of icy conditions on Interstate 10 near Schuster Avenue Thursday morning.

TxDOT tweeted drivers should slow down and allow extra following distance; do not use cruise control.

El Paso trash pickup, Sun Metro continue service

Trash and recyclables will be collected as scheduled Thursday and Friday, city of El Paso officials said in a news release. If weather conditions cause hazardous roadway conditions, the Environmental Services Department may only collect the gray bins. The public will be notified if the recycling collections are suspended.

Sun Metro will run regular service Thursday and Friday. Terminals are being salted to prevent ice from forming on pathways. Passengers might experience delays due to weather conditions. Streetcar service will be suspended Thursday due to the forecast. Streetcar services will resume from 4 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Schooldistrictclosures include EPISD, Socorro ISD and YISD

Several El Paso school districts and colleges will close Thursday in response to a winter storm that is forecast to bring rain, snow and dangerous wind chills to the area.

  • El Paso Independent School District plans to close its doors Thursday.
  • Socorro ISD school campuses and district offices will not open Thursday and classes will be canceled for the day.
  • All Ysleta ISD schools, administrative offices and the Comprehensive Care Center will be closed Thursday and all classes will be canceled for the day.
  • Canutillo ISD will close Thursday to all students and staff, and a start time for Friday will be determined tomorrow based on weather conditions.
  • Anthony ISD will also close Thursday. The district will monitor weather conditions throughout Thursday and Friday.
  • Clint ISD canceled classesfor Thursday, Feb. 3.
